SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 13

Requesting the Division of Highways name the bridge which will cross the CSX switch yard in Hinton, Summers County, replacing the historically significant Avis Concrete Arch Bridge, the "Avis Bridge".

Whereas, The Avis Concrete Arch Bridge, also known as the Avis Overhead Bridge, was constructed in 1928 as a means for a safe and more direct route across the C & O Railroad switch yard that separated Avis from the rest of Hinton; and
Whereas, The Avis Concrete Arch Bridge, formally dedicated June 30, 1929, was constructed by the internationally renowned Luten Bridge Company of York, Pennsylvania; and
Whereas, The Avis Concrete Arch Bridge, rated "Historically Significant" during the 1984 West Virginia Historic Bridge Survey, is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and is being closed to traffic in order to preserve the bridge for the education and enjoyment of future generations; and
Whereas, The Division of Highways is constructing a new bridge south of the existing structure to take the place of the old bridge, maintaining the safe route between Avis and Hinton; and
Whereas, The people living in and around Avis and Hinton are desirous of retaining the name "Avis Bridge" for the new structure in order to tie the new bridge to the historic older bridge; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways name the bridge which will cross the CSX switch yard in Hinton, Summers County, replacing the historically significant Avis Concrete Arch Bridge, the "Avis Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways cause an appropriate sign to be placed at either end of this bridge which designates the bridge as the "Avis Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, the Commissioner of the Division of Highways and the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office.
